Mix Time: Nude Techno Dancing

It’s bop time again! And just in time for the (lack of) summer here in the north of Europe. I’m convinced that Rihanna’s Umbrella has been at number one for ten weeks because the entire wash out of a season has been one long marketing exercise for her ode to rain gear. Quite who orchestrated such a campaign is beyond me, but I’d hire them.

But I digress.

One is off to London on Sunday (if it isn’t submerged by then) for the start of a fortnight’s hols. And I really can’t wait. Next Thurs, I’ll be off to Brazil for a college pal’s wedding (any excuse really). It’s in Campinas, which is a little outside Sao Paolo, and then we spend a few days in Paraty (pictured) before jetting back to London and me to Dublin. I’m bouncing with anticipation!Image of Paraty

So I want you to bounce to my latest mix. It’s got the usual liberal sprinking of Wendy house from Seamus Haji. And once again the Freemasons have managed to turn one of Beyawnce’s turgid R&B dirges into disco gold. My favourite is a kickin’ cover of the Yazoo (or ‘Yaz’ if you’re American) classic ‘Don’t Go’ by Frooty Collective, a promo I found at djmag.com (you heard it here first kids!).

So, it builds from a gentle Roachford to some ballsy grindy stuff (and a very boring segue to Jackson 5), takes off around track 5, then chills out a bit again until it descends into total arms-in-the-air houstastic divatastic joy and gets all intense with Donna Summer and then… lights go up, crowd goes crazy and… Nitelink (or find a houseparty fast)!

The title is a tribute to the latest trend in dancing that’s catching inner north Dublin by storm. Watch out world!

“What is it, you cnut face?”

17 07 2007

I had a delightful visit to Dundalk last weekend to visit the lovely Enda (another one) and Catherine and came away with a badly sunburned head and a little tidbit about The Sound Of Music. They stayed in a hotel in Salzburg which played the movie every night at 8pm. And they noticed that one of the nuns is very rude to poor Maria. Check out the scene above for the god-honest evidence. Arf!

The Day Before You Came

12 07 2007

Ok, couldn’t resist posting this. It’s a version of Abba’s minor 1982 hit The Day Before You Came by English eccentrics, The Real Tuesday Weld.

Now, I rather love the original which was a last gasp of genius from an act who had mentally if not physically split up, and it was a far cry from the uber-pop of Super Trooper, SOS, Gimme Gimme Gimme et al. It’s an odd spoken word track in which the lonely protagonist lists all of the mundane things that a person does in the course of an average day. In fact, were it not for the title, this would  be up there with the best of Joy Division in terms of misery.

The Real Tuesday Weld I know very little about other than when I saw them support The Magnetic Fields in Dublin a few years ago, I was most impressed by their stylish suits and foppish hairstyles. Terribly English, terribly knowing and terribly arch. One track, Bathtime in Clerkenwell, is a skittering 1920s type thing but quite untypical of the act. Anyway, all very clever if a little cold overall, I thought.

And yet here is their version of The Day Before You Came, and yes, where Agnetha managed to fill the words with pathos, steering along the right side of camp, TRTW’s cover transports us to London and laces things with ennui and one eyebrow aloft. It’s still a tad sad though. One can visualise this very trendy young buck at the weekend grumping about having to smoke outdoors and looking underfed.

So the person did come along the next day, but Stephen Coates probably lolled about on the bed smoking a cigarette before doing the crossword.
I don’t quite know what to make of it really.  See what you think.

Rather Good Track No. 321 Di Johnston: Trite

11 07 2007

Image of Di Johnston

Here’s another lovely thing that floated into my downloads folder. It’s by some young woman called Di Johnston, whose mummy and daddy were diplomats in Hong Kong (whyever that matters, I have no clue). We also learn that she does voiceovers  “including Lincoln Mercury, Pantene, Lenscrafters, Verizon Wireless, PNC Bank and CMT. In 2006, she was selected as the announcer for the Miss America Pageant.” We obviously must buy her album immediately.

Anyway, this track is a rather pleasing electronic wafty sort of thing which won’t scare the neighbours, yet lyrically tackles the conundrum facing first time buyers  when choosing mortgage providers. * It’s from an album called The Shanghai Restoration Project presents Di Johnston, which sounds rather promising, does it not?

* This bit not strictly true.

Work is nuts!

10 07 2007

Sorry for the hiatus in blogage of late. Work has been particularly busy with publications and horrid database crapola to contend with.

I absolutely love my job and I’m quite lucky in that I get to do all sorts of groovy things such as podcasting, giving talks, playing with new technology, international conferences, and generally I’m encouraged to come up with ideas and experiment with things! Part of my brief involves being watchful for future technological trends!!!

Consequently, I often work after hours, as essentially anything web 2.0 related such as blogging etc is work-related in a way.But sometimes, the pressure is on. There are a couple of major things I need to have under control before I begin my holiers later this month, so the energy is going there rather than the fun stuff.

That said, I’m tweaking a bonkers 80s mix for release shortly. Whatever credibility I may have shall be dissolved in an instant! I’ll probably never live it down…. but who can resist Colonel Abrams, eh?
