How We Watch Our Toasters These Days. Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome

After the cancellation of the (very good) Caprica series, SyFy have resurrected the BSG franchise again with another prequel Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome.

Blood & Chrome is currently being broadcast as a 10-episode online series in conjunction with Machinima.com and will also appear as a televised movie in early 2013 on Syfy (in the US).

It’s interesting to see a different broadcasting approach being taken. Ten minute chunks (or 20 minute chunks as the last few eps have been shared in couples) might be ideal for the commute or the second screen habits we are picking up.

In this household, BSG was never watched on live TV. It was consumed first through boxsets and later with iTunes downloads. Caprica was a different matter, but let’s just say that we weren’t prepared to wait a year for the series to appear on TV and legitimate download. What’s more, I wanted to take part in those second screen conversations roughly simultaneously. (Bad us, but we did pick up the boxset (much) later.)

Right now, after a strong start of over 2 million for episode 1, subsequent episodes of Blood & Chrome have to date clocked up around 600,000 views. This doesn’t seem particularly high, but let’s check in again before the complete broadcast in 2013.

So say we all…
