Irish Blog Awards 09: Time running out to nominate…

Nominations are now open for the 2009 Irish Blog Awards and they close at 6pm on January 14th.

Eeek! I have made my nominations – some old faves and a couple of new kids.

Last year, I managed to make the shortlist for Best Popculture Blog, which was rather fun (thanks again to my nominator (is that a word?)) but one was thrashed soundly by Rick O’Shea. And let’s face it, that’s probably going to be the case again this year. Which is fine -having witnessed him in action at the Irish Web Awards, there can be few persons whom one could hope to be thrashed by.

Now that I’m done mangling the English language, go and vote, damn yous!

Back from Greece!

We’re back! Just spent a blissful, sun-drenched, quiet week in Oia, a small village in Santorini, one of the Greek islands. I thought it would be boring, but I quickly learned to love the routine of healthy fruity breakfasts followed by pretty much the entire day reading and listening to music while soaking up the sun on a lounger next to a pool. Yum.

We were the only same-sex couple at the hotel (which consisted of caves!) and the other guests were honeymooners, loads of Americans or well-to-do Europeans. All were very friendly, but more importantly, no one invaded anyone’s bliss-out space. A nice man gave us bottles of wine two days in a row! A delightful Popeye-like Austrian man and his Japanese wife and stunning daughter were cheerful neighbours! A super sexy French glamourpuss spent days nuzzling up to her new husband (we presumed); we loved her because she wore her high heels around the pool – just like telly!

The guests were generally low-key and friendly. Except for an Israeli guy who arrived the day before we left. On arrival, he sits down with his wife, makes his phone ring twice really loudly (loud phones were simply not done), makes a big fuss about his wife’s stomach being too sensitive for fruit juice out of a carton, then proceeds to demand chips instead of mashed potato – for his wife… Then he proceeds to solicit opinion on how unreasonable the (super-courteous) staff were re the chips. What a twat.

But anyway, it was a fabulous holiday and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Back to London now, but New York City is beckoning…..

In the meantime, here is a Greek version of Nickelback’s hoary old ‘How You Remind Me’ sung by a disco lungsmith. And why not?

Panti @ Dublin Pride

Pic of Panti @ Dublin Pride

We’ve just had Pride this weekend gone by. A bit overcast, but a very infectious atmosphere. Boyf came over from London to celebrate too – all good. Got a bit trashed and generally had a wonderful time.

Here is a pic of the wonderful Panti, Dublin’s most amazing drag act (apart from Shirley Temple-Bar and Veda Beaux Reves). She was MC for the afterparty (which we left after one too many ‘jazz’ acts). You can see her opening speech on YouTube.com if you like.

And here’s a link to some of my pics of the day on Flickr.

And here are some my pal David took with his enormous new camera.

Happy Pride everyone!

Come on Poland!

Pope and the March, originally uploaded by Jim Torr.

Hmmm, despite being listed earlier in the year as one of the world's top ten most homophobic places alongside Iran, Egypt and Uganda, things seem to be changing in Poland.

This year there were more people (6-10,000) in the Warsaw demonstration and no major ugliness.

In fact, despite the march being banned by the mayor of Warsaw, the marchers were joined by several politicians including the Deputy Prime Minister. Cool.
So, Poland, shall we see you fall out of the Top Ten next year, maybe? Best let your politicians know.
